My work originates in observation of the natural world – from the graphic lines of an empty nest that is only made visible in winter to the alternating configurations of (seeming) chaos and order found in cloud formations and summer insect swarms. A circular shape often frames the work, a reference to the murky images found in the lens of a microscope while other images are as loose and ephemeral as a shifting weather pattern.
Earlier drawings took the form of deconstructed natural history and pattern books, retaining only a minimal suggestion of the interior pages. Some of these drawings featured sewing, making an additional connection to the physical structure of books.
About
Andrea Collins is a visual artist and designer who has shown regionally and nationally in venues including the Three Rivers Arts Festival, Pittsburgh, John Fonda Gallery in Baltimore and the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. In addition, Andrea has worked with fellow artist Harriet Hacker on numerous curating and design projects and was a co-founder of the former lowercase gallery, located in Wrightsville, Pennsylvania.
